sc Heerenveen recorded an important win in the battle for a spot in the playoffs for European soccer. In Friesland, relegation candidate FC Volendam was swept aside 2-1.

Big man on the Frisians’ side was once again striker Sydney van Hooijdonk. The 23-year-old Brabander signed for both Frisian goals. That wasn’t too surprising, as the last six Heerenveen league goals all came from the attacking leader.

The fans at the Abe Lenstra Stadium did not have to wait long for Van Hooijdonk’s first goal. Osame Sahraoui was sent into the deep and delivered a tight cross that Van Hooijdonk only had to run in.

Henk Veerman (ex-Heerenveen) equalized for the Volendammers ten minutes later. A fine ball from Calvin Twigt behind the Frisian defense was cleverly taken by Veerman and then shot hard into the corner. Veerman’s goal had a slight air of offside about it, but after the VAR lines were drawn, the goal stood.

Not long after, the long striker missed a great opportunity, while Van Hooijdonk scored at the other end. A brilliant cross from Anas Tahiri ended up in the penalty area with Milan van Ewijk. The right back saw a Volendam foot deflect the ball away, but Van Hooijdonk was the first to shoot hard.

The agile Oristanio made Heerenveen’s defense sweat after halftime, but it did not lead to the 2-2. Heerenveen was dangerous in the second half only through shots from the second line by Van Hooijdonk and Thom Haye, but apart from a Florent Sanchez overtake, they had little more to fear from the Volendam side.
