OnlyFans scams on the rise: how to protect yourself if you are a content creator or subscriber

OnlyFans is one of the most important platforms today. With a huge boost during the pandemic, the app now boasts a user base of over 170 million people in 7 years of life.

Content creators and creators have been characterized by adult theming, something that has caught the attention of cybercriminals, who are attacking online privacy in multiple ways, a fact that ESET complaint through a blog post.

Problems at OnlyFans

Many content producers have already expressed concerns about leaked content, stolen accounts, content posted as an act of revenge porn, and even stolen content downloaded by paying subscribers and then redistributed – often for a fee – on other social networks and messaging platforms.

And like the content creators themselves, subscribers are also at risk.

Those who create content for OnlyFans must provide personal information to set up an account, their real bank details, name and ID, their social media profiles, not only for the verification process, but also to receive payments.

ESET recommends using a secondary email address to set up the account in case there is ever a breach of personal data in OnlyFans. Disposable credit cards can also be used for online purchases.

On the other hand, it is important to pay attention to possible attempts to steal accounts through social engineering or even cyberbullying techniques, which can lead to handing over passwords and other login data.

For subscribers, it is recommended to use a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and be careful when clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources, and be wary of techniques such as voice phishing (also known as vishing), as they are often used to steal user accounts.

Some extra settings

Two-step authentication is an additional layer of security that is designed to protect online accounts from unauthorized access and is offered to all accounts in OnlyFans.

This security mechanism requires that to access the account the person enter a code (which can be sent to a phone or generated by an authentication application) in addition to the account password.
