Apple prepares augmented reality glasses with metalens technology, says analyst

Apple is preparing augmented reality augmented reality developed with technology metalenswith which it expects to replace plastic lenses, and which it would launch in 2026 or 2027, “at the earliest”.

The company will hold its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next June, from the 5th to the 9th, an event in which it will unveil the latest news of its operating systems (iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS) and services.

What’s new for Apple

Among the new products this year, it is expected to present its mixed reality viewer, after suffering a series of delays in its launch due to difficulties with the development of this device, as Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman commented in February.

Shortly before, the also analyst Ming Chi-Kuo commented that this product would arrive later than expected by the technology company due to the fact that it was still registering bugs in its software.

Also during this time, there has been talk that the U.S. manufacturer is working on a cheaper version of the visor, to be presented in 2024 or early 2025, equipped with components from its iPhones.

Lenses with metalens

Now Kuo has commented that the manufacturer is preparing another model, which the analyst has called Apple Glasses, with which it seeks to meet three objectives that the company has. On the one hand, reduce dependence on existing plastic lenses, take advantage of technological advantages and facilitate the use of technology. metalens.

According to Kuo, the glasses integrating this technology, which would not reach the mixed reality viewer, will begin mass production in 2026 or 2027 “at the earliest,” although he has not advanced that the company will give information about them in the framework of WWDC.

With that, the analyst has said that the supply chain is expected to start mass developing products with this solution in 2024 and that he expects it to “replace the iPad’s plastic lens of Face ID Tx.”

However, he has pointed out that, taking into account the manufacturing processes of these components, metal lenses could replace the current low-end ones between 2028 and 2030. He also predicted that “over the next few years, the metalens will gradually replace the current plastic ones in 3D applications.” (Europa Press)
