Spain announced Thursday an investigation into the U.S. chatbot ChatGPT, on the same day that France did so and the European Union set up a working group on this technology.
The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) reported in a statement that it “has initiated ex officio” an “investigation into the U.S. company OpenAI, owner of the service. ChatGPTfor possible non-compliance with data protection “regulations”.
ChatGPT in the spotlight
The Italian authorities blocked on March 31 to. ChatGPTa robot that appeared in November and that through artificial intelligence can hold complex conversations with its interlocutor, claiming precisely that it did not respect the legislation on personal data.
The French data protection authority announced Thursday its own investigation, while the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), in charge of coordinating similar offices of the European Union countries, said to have created a working group dedicated to the matter.
In doing so, the EDPB seeks an exchange of information among European authorities on possible actions to be taken with respect to. ChatGPT.
“With the start of the investigation in Spain and the participation in the European working group, the AEPD acts in parallel (…) as a national supervisory and control authority, as well as in coordination with its European counterparts through the Committee,” the Spanish institution explained.
They do not want to close the doors
The AEPD said it was in favor of “innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence,” but stated that technological development must always be “compatible with the rights and freedoms of individuals.”
After Italy blocked ChatGPTOpenAI said it was “committed to protecting people’s privacy” and believed its tool complied with the law. (AFP)
