Robbery with an explosive belt at the casino of Enghien-les-Bains

Very big fear in the afternoon of last Monday, May 1st in the casino of Enghien-les-Bains! A 25 years old man was arrested then placed in police custody for having stormed the mythical casino located in the department of Val-d’Oise. According to the media which were the first to relay this fact, the young man would have wanted to attack the establishmentnt to compensate the loss of a large sum of money of which he was deprived while playing.

In actuality, the attack was very brief. At approximately 2:00 p.m., the individual presented himself at the entrance to the casino, wearing a vest apparently equipped with explosives. The man then went to the cash register and demanded that the hostess give him all the money in the cash register or he would set off the device on his vest. According to the investigators, the man broke the protective glass of the counter to make himself heard.

It is at this moment that the agents of security of the casino of Enghien-les-Bains intervened. These last ones tried to reason the young man, persuading him at first to remove his vest (whose explosives were in reality false). Then, they controlled him by tackling him to the ground and putting him out of harm’s way. Unknown to the police, the individual in question was arrested and placed in custody. Bomb disposal experts also went to the Enghien-les-Bains casino to ensure that the belt was safe.

In panic, a casino customer jumped from the second floor

As mentioned above, according to the police, the 20-year-old organized the robbery in order to recover after having lost a lot of money on the gaming tables. More than two hundred people were present in the casino at the time of the robbery. We can easily imagine the general panic that was installed during the intrusion of the robber!

This is all the more true that one of the customers of the casino has quite simply jumped from the second floor at the moment the alarm was given (causing in the process the rush of many people, most of them being “old”)! Fortunately, the person affected escaped without any injuries. The cashier, on the other hand, was in a state of shock. A psychological cell was opened by the casino.

Note that the casino of Enghien-les-Bains reopened its doors five hours after the attack, on May 1 at 19 hours precisely. The investigation is currently being conducted by the Val-d’Oise judicial police, under the supervision of the Regional Directorate of the Judicial Police (DRPJ).
