HBO Max and Discovery: New name and price leaked

Warner Bros. Discovery will unveil this week the new merged app for their services. HBO Max y Discoverybut the medium New York Times has leaked much of what will be the next streaming juggernaut.

According to a media report, this new initiative will simply be called ‘Max‘ and will hit TVs and screens in just a matter of weeks.

Max: what we know about the new service

According to the report, Warner Bros. Discovery believes that Max is “one of his top priorities for 2023”.

Max will merge the catalogs of HBO Maxwith series such as “The Sopranos” or “Succession”, with Discover series such as “Dr. Pimple Popper” and “Fixer Upper”.

Its price, as revealed by the Times, will be $16 per month in the U.S., the price it currently has HBO Max. Of course, there will be several cost levels, including an affordable one with advertising, sources say.

Its launch in North America is being planned for May or June, while it is expected to arrive in Latin America by the end of 2023.

Warner Bros. Discovery have plans for the future with this service: it expects to reach 130 million subscribers by 2025, surpassing the 96.1 million that it maintains HBO Max Currently.

The company believes that the platform will break even during 2024 and by 2025 will begin to be profitable.

A market to compete in

Max will have to fight against the market giant, Netflix, which has 231 million subscribers. The other big one is Disney, which together with Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu has 235 million subscribers.

New York Times also reveals that the launch event will last just over an hour and will not feature stars, but rather will be an update on the technical details of the service, as well as catalog news.

It is not yet clear how existing subscribers will migrate from HBO Max to the new service once it becomes available. That’s one of the issues executives are expected to address on Wednesday. Discovery+ will remain a standalone application, as previously rumored.
