English soccer club Burnley has secured a return to the Premier League. The team of Belgian coach Vincent Kompany, a former Manchester City player, won the away game against Middlesbrough 2-1 in the Championship.

Left wing defender Ian Maatsen had a starting place at Burnley. He is rented from Chelsea and a regular in Kompany’s team. The 21-year-old Maatsen has a contract at Chelsea until the summer of 2024. He played in youth for Feyenoord, Sparta and PSV.

Winning goal Roberts

Ashley Barnes put Burnley ahead at Middlesbrough and Chuba Akpom equalized from a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Connor Roberts took the winning goal midway through the second half.

With seven games to go, Burnley is unbeaten by No. 3 Luton Town, which has only six games left on the schedule. Burnley came to 87 points, Luton Town has 68. The numbers 1 and 2 of the Championship promote directly to the Premier League. Sheffield United is second.

Burnley relegated to the Championship last year. The club where Wout Weghorst was playing at the time finished eighteenth at the top level.
