According to reports, Super Mario Bros. The Movie debuted in first place at the U.S. box office with an impressive $31.7 million in box office receipts. Another film released in theaters yesterday, Air – The Big Leap Story, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, grossed “only” $3.2 million.
After a more remarkable debut than expected, box office forecasts for Illumination’s big-screen adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. series have been revised upward: $92 million over the weekend and $141 million in the first five days of release. At the international box office, Super Mario Bros. The Movie debuted with $34.7 million in box office in 44 markets, led by Mexico ($5.9 million), the United Kingdom and Ireland ($4.8 million) and China ($4.7 million).
