Vinyl sales surpass CD sales for the first time since 1987

The vinyls are having a strong resurgence and are outselling the vinyls themselves. CD in the United States, a situation not seen since 1987.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) annual revenue report.)41 million records of vinyl against 33 million CD during 2022.

The vinyl sensation

The sales of vinyl records vinyl have steadily increased over the past 16 years, according to the RIAA report, and now account for 71% of all physical music format revenues.

While physical formats as a whole increased by 4 %, earning $1700 million between 2021 and 2022, the sales of vinyl alone accounted for 1.2 billion, experiencing a 17% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

Comparatively, sales of CD plummeted by 18% in 2022.

The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) reported the same milestone earlier this year, although its figures only refer to UK sales data.

Factors for its growth.

Many experts claim that the format of the vinyl provides a warmer, more authentic sound compared to digital.

Nostalgia also plays an important role for those who lived through the golden age of the vinylbut younger generations are also driving sales, praising the tangibility and artistry of the format.

Taylor Swift was the top-selling artist last year, selling nearly 1.7 million albums from vinylmore than Harry Styles (719,000 sales) and The Beatles (553,000 sales) combined.
