Man gets out of prison 38 years later for murder he did not commit
Maurice Hastings spent the last 38 years incarcerated for a robbery-homicide and sexual assault he did not commit.
Hastings currently has 69 years old and after performing a test of DNAwas found not guilty and released in October. In addition, witnesses had supported his alibi and there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime scene.
“It means a lot. I’m grateful for the sentence and for the apology. Everything has been wonderful today,” he declared Hastings at a press conference after learning of the ruling.
The assistant prosecutor Martha Carrillo apologized to Hastings: “I’m sorry. I’m very sorry for the injustice, for the enormous injustice that the Prosecutor’s Office and the penal system have perpetrated against you. There is much to learn from all this (…). I know that it is not enough to say ‘I am sorry’ for 38 years in prison and I am humbly aware”.
