The Champions League final won has become Ilkay Gündogan’s last game in the Manchester City shirt. The German midfielder is leaving for FC Barcelona free of transfer fees.

The 32-year-old Gündogan signs at Camp Nou until the summer of 2025. Barcelona also has an option for a third season.

Bulging trophy cabinet

Gündogan played no less than seven years with Manchester City, which became Premier League champion five times during that period. He played soccer in England and amassed a bulging trophy cabinet.

Indeed, he also won the FA Cup twice, the League Cup four times and the Community Shield twice. The best prize of all was won by Gündogan in his last match in English service. As captain, he led his team past Internazionale (1-0) in the Champions League final in Istanbul.

In his penultimate game for City, Gündogan played a starring role. He scored two fine goals in the 2-1 won FA Cup final against Manchester United.

Barcelona will be the fourth club for the graceful midfielder. The 66-time Germany international played domestically for 1.FC Nürnberg and Borussia Dortmund. With Dortmund, he won the national title, the cup and the German Super Cup.

At Barcelona, Gündogan should form a midfield with Frenkie de Jong, among others. The German is the successor to Sergio Busquets, who leaves free after fifteen years. The Spanish midfielder will become a teammate of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
