Just recovered from the shock of relegation to the first division, FC Emmen is already working on a return to the highest level. Trainer Fred Grim has to shape that resurgence.

The 57-year-old from Amsterdam is the successor to Dick Lukkien, who will be in charge of FC Groningen next season. Grim signs a contract for two seasons.

Getting started at the club that relegated him

After his career as a goalkeeper at Ajax and SC Cambuur, Grim worked as a youth coach and assistant at Ajax and Sparta, before standing on his own two feet at Almere City. He then became coach of the young national team, assistant coach at the big national team and even interim national team coach for a while after the dismissal of Danny Blind in 2017.

Once Grim was relegated as a coach: in 2017, Grim, then as assistant to coach Dick Advocaat at Sparta, was edged out by FC Emmen.

2018: Fred Grim as Dick Advocaat’s assistant on the day Sparta is condemned to relegation by Emmen.

He erased that bad taste by forcing promotion to the premier league a year later with RKC Waalwijk via a memorable 5-4 win in Deventer over Go Ahead Eagles.

His last employer was Willem II, where he was sacked in March 2022 after just one win in a run of 18 duels.
