Managing director Van der Sar steps down at Ajax: ‘I’ve run out’

Edwin van der Sar is no longer general manager of Ajax, the club announced on its own website. “After almost eleven years on the board I have run out. We have experienced very nice things, but it has also been an incredibly tough period,” Van der Sar said.

He will transfer his duties to his fellow board members as of June 1, 2023. The Supervisory Board (SB) has asked Van der Sar to stay on formally until Aug. 1 for a proper handover of national and international dossiers.

Under former player Van der Sar, who took office in 2016, Ajax finished third behind Feyenoord and PSV this season. It was Ajax’s worst season in fourteen years.

The sporting collapse – partly due to the departure of first Marc Overmars as director of soccer affairs and then head coach Erik ten Hag – was heavily blamed on Van der Sar among supporters.
