Watch the summary of FC Groningen – Sparta
FC Groningen failed to end the season on a positive note. The relegated side went down hard against Sparta Rotterdam 5-0 in an empty Euroborg.
The Groningers tried to make something of it in the beginning and initially could keep up well with the number six of the Netherlands. Laros Duarte scored from distance, putting Sparta goalkeeper Nick Olij to the test.
In the 24th minute, however, things went wrong for Groningen: Nordin Musampa got red for bringing down Dirk Abels and the free kick was beautifully aimed into the crossbar by Jonathan de Guzman.
After that it was one-way traffic, although Sparta did not find the goal again until after halftime. After substitute Koki Saito’s 2-0, after a nice attack, things did go fast. Pedro Alemañ was dangerous twice within seconds, but goalkeeper Jan de Boer saved. A few minutes later Verschueren, after a nice cross from Abels, scored.
Tobias Lauritsen scored the fourth Rotterdam goal from the rebound. Vito van Crooij finally made it 5-0 from the penalty spot.
