Orange international and ‘top scorer in the world’ Kalma from Twente to Wolfsburg
Kalma opts for top club Wolfsburg: ‘Time for next step’
Fenna Kalma will continue her career at German top club VfL Wolfsburg. The striker has been scoring in the women’s premier league on behalf of FC Twente in recent seasons.
In Germany, she will meet Oranje internationals Lynn Wilms, Dominique Janssen and Jill Roord. She is also reunited with trainer Tommy Stroot.
“I’m in it like this: I’m going to try it and I’ll see how far I get,” the 23-year-old Kalma says of her choice for a big step up the ladder. “In the end, I also have to prove myself and nothing is promised to me.”
Top scorer in the world
Kalma prolonged her top scorer title in the premier league last season with thirty goals. In two seasons at sc Heerenveen and four at Twente, she reached 113 goals in 99 duels. In 2022, she already became the world’s top scorer in women’s soccer.
Despite that absurdly high average, Kalma has yet to win her place in the Dutch national team, with only five international matches and two goals behind her name. Even with the undisputed Vivianne Miedema missing next summer’s World Cup due to a knee injury, the question is whether national coach Andries Jonker will give Kalma the confidence.
“I have not discussed this with the national coach,” Kalma said of her transfer. “I think I can develop as a soccer star, but also as a person.”
Fenna Kalma, the most effective soccer star of 2022
Kalma had sort of outgrown the premier league, judging by her production. Moreover, she had previously commented on the expansion of the premier league, if it would lead to large differences in strength between them and therefore even more high scores. Last season, only Twente won three times 9-0.
At Wolfsburg, which plays the Champions League final against Barcelona in Eindhoven on June 3, things won’t be so easy anymore. “It’s a top club, there are good players there. The most important thing for me is that I have prospects of playing there, I don’t need the guarantee.”
Among other things, Kalma became Dutch champion twice with FC Twente.
