Siem de Jong (34) says goodbye as professional footballer: ‘It was an honor’
Six-time Dutch international Siem de Jong will play his last game as a soccer player on Friday. The 34-year-old midfielder has decided to quit after a difficult season at De Graafschap.
The club from Doetinchem will play the last league match of this season in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, against FC Den Bosch, on their own field on Friday.
“The dream started almost thirty years ago next to Stadion De Vijverberg, when Luuk and I climbed over the fence to play nice soccer on the old training pitch,” De Jong reveals. “Tomorrow I will play my last game as a professional footballer in this beautiful stadium. Thank you for that, it was an honor.”
The brother of striker Luuk de Jong played 341 league games, for Ajax, PSV and Newcastle United, among others. During his time in Amsterdam, Siem de Jong was important in taking the national title.
