Supreme Ajax women capture national title for first time since 2018
The Ajax women have won the national title for the first time since 2018. The final premier league game day was still full of tension beforehand, but the Amsterdammers crushed it with lightning speed. After the resounding 6-1 victory at PEC Zwolle, the party erupted.
Suzanne Bakker’s team traveled to Zwolle with a point lead and did not allow themselves to be surprised, although Ajax swerved after eight minutes when Senne van de Velde hit the post.
A minute later, at the other end, Dutch national Romée Leuchter showed her class by accounting for the opening goal. Shortly before the break, after a strong phase by PEC, Quinty Sabajo and again Leuchter threw the game into the lock.
As a result, the second half could almost be dismissed in writing. Tiny Hoekstra, a week ago the celebrated woman against FC Twente, completed the party with the 4-0 and 5-0. Ashleigh Weerden fired the sixth Amsterdam goal into the short corner after more than an hour.
Under the watchful eye of general manager Edwin van der Sar and Wesley Sneijder, among others, more Ajax goals remained out in the closing stages, but that was not to spoil the fun. Bo van Egmond did save the honor on behalf of PEC.
The result of FC Twente, the champion of the previous three completed seasons, no longer mattered due to developments in Zwolle. A 2-1 victory was recorded against Feyenoord.
Joran Pot’s formation did go behind on a goal by former player Sabrine Ellouzi, but Dutch international Fenna Kalma equalized from a penalty with her 30th goal of the season. After halftime Wieke Kaptein headed in the 2-1.
The grapes are sour for Twente, with only two defeats in twenty league games, against Ajax and Fortuna Sittard. On Ascension Day, it still plays the cup final against PSV.
