Gerald Vanenburg is the next in line to leave Ajax. After assistant coach Michael Reiziger, head of scouting Henk Veldmate and head of youth training Saïd Ouaali, the technical coach also decides to turn his back on the club after this season.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Vanenburg says he no longer feels comfortable at Ajax: “A lot has changed in soccer in general and at Ajax in particular. And in my opinion you have to feel good at what you do.”

Vananburg (59) returned to Ajax three seasons ago after 34 years. The former international, praised for his technique, was snared to teach the youth the intricacies of the trade. He also prepared Mohamed Ihattaren for a return to the pitch.

Concerns about Ajax DNA

“The dna of Ajax is increasingly being taken out of the club,” he continued his criticism. “With the first team, I miss firmness that players can fall back on when things go badly.”

Coach Alfred Schreuder was fired during this season, the future of interim coach John Heitinga is uncertain and technical manager Gerry Hamstra stepped down, partly after heavy criticism of his transfer policy. In the premier league, reigning champion Ajax now risks missing out on a spot among the first two and the lucrative Champions League.

Ajax does play Sunday in the final against PSV for the KNVB Cup.
