Two inmates escape Virginia jail by digging tunnel with toothbrush

Two prisoners from Newport News (Virginia) have escaped from prison by digging a tunnel. with a modified toothbrush, according to city authorities.

The prisoners have been at liberty for barely nine hours, since little later have been arrested at an IHOP franchise restaurant. (International House of Pancakes), which specializes in breakfast, the local Sheriff’s Office has reported.

According to the official statement, the two men, who have been incarcerated since last year for misdemeanors, took advantage of a failure in the structure to dig the tunnel.

Authorities have not given further details about the glitch as, they claim, it is located in several places in the prison and they will now have to secure the structure.

A team of city engineers is already working on ways to mitigate the weakness, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“I am grateful to the citizens who saw Garza and Nemo (the prisoners). at the IHOP and notified the authorities“, the local sheriff, Gabe Morgan, said in the statement.

No charges relating to his escape have yet been announced.
