Former Orange striker Hasselbaink becomes assistant Southgate at England

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is national coach Gareth Southgate’s new assistant with the England team. The 50-year-old former striker, who scored nine goals in 23 international matches for the Oranje, was already on the field with the England internationals on Tuesday.

England will play EC qualifiers against Italy (away) and Ukraine (home) on Thursday and Sunday.

Teammates

Hasselbaink and Southgate were teammates at Middlesbrough. After his career, Hasselbaink became a trainer. He started in Belgium with Antwerp FC and in England had Burton Albion, Queens Park Rangers and Northampton Town under his belt.

Surinamese-born Hasselbaink played soccer in the Premier League for many years and is a big name in English soccer. He played at Leeds United, Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic. He became top scorer of the Premier League twice.
