Atlético Madrid pulled out a victory (1-0) in the absolute closing stages of the away match against Girona. Álvaro Morata, filling in for Memphis Depay, tapped the ball in in injury time.

With the win, Atlético does good business in the battle for a Champions League ticket, which is up for grabs by the clubs that are in the top four at the end of the season. The Madrilenians are third with six points ahead of number five Real Betis.

Atlético follows leaders Barcelona and number two Real Madrid at a suitable distance, as it is seventeen and eight points behind those teams, respectively.

Memphis Depay was dangerous in the first half with a half-volley and a shot from close range that went high over. Coach Diego Simeone, however, did not seem entirely satisfied with the Dutchman’s performance. He was substituted after an hour along with two others.

Atlético did not have an easy time against Girona. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak had to intervene several times. The Madrilenians had some opportunities of their own, but needed a late goal for the three points.
