Bayern wins convincingly over Ajax executioner Union Berlin and is leader again
Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga duel with rival Union Berlin convincingly. Thanks to goals by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala, the top match was decided in the first half: 3-0.
Bayern is the leader again as a result of the win due to a better goal difference than number two Borussia Dortmund. Union Berlin, which eliminated Ajax in the Europa League on Thursday, makes a pass through the defeat and follows on three points.
Union played in Munich, where it occasionally snowed, in the way the team has been successful all season: it let Bayern come and, with Dutch striker Sheraldo Becker among others, lurked on a quick counter.
Still, the Berlin club could not prevent the first big chance from going to the home team. Thomas Müller tapped in a Choupo-Moting cross, but hit the ball completely the wrong way.
Bayern bangs on Berlin wall
Bayern, with Matthijs de Ligt in the starting lineup and Daley Blind and Ryan Gravenberch on the bench, continued to pound on the Berlin wall in the first half and broke the spell after half an hour. Coman crossed and Choupo-Mouting, despite the ball coming slightly behind him, cleverly managed to head it in.
Moments later, Coman was not the instigator, but the finisher. The striker was sent deep by Müller, rounded goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow and slid the ball simply into the goal. Even before halftime, Musiala threw the game into the lock: 3-0.
Completely against its nature, Union opted more for attack after halftime, creating space for Bayern. The Rekordmeister had mercy on Union, however, although Müller was close to making it 4-0 20 minutes before time. Goalkeeper Rønnow took Müller’s shot out of the goal with his head.
