Union Berlin failed to capitalize on Saturday’s defeat by Bayern Munich. Union came no further than 0-0 against Schalke 04 and now leads the Bundesliga together with Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, which won 4-1 over Hertha BSC.

Bayern, Dortmund and Union all have 43 points. Next Sunday the topper between Bayern and Union is scheduled. Dortmund will then play against lowly ranked Hoffenheim.

Schalke offered Union, Ajax’s opponent in the Europa League, a fine game before halftime. The only chance was for Dutchman Danilho Doekhi, but Schalke’s goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann tapped the ball just over.

Relegation candidate Schalke became bolder after halftime and saw Michael Frey create danger twice. At Union the belief in a win slowly ebbed away. In the closing stages Jordan lashed out for Union, but his shot went over.

After last week’s 0-0 against Ajax, Union played a scoreless draw for the second time in a row. Next Thursday is the return game against Ajax in Berlin.

Dortmund continues good series

Dortmund did not give away a point after the winter break and also took three points again against Hertha. The home team struggled at times against Hertha, but was more effective in dealing with the chances.

Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring with a nice header, then found Donyell Malen who was able to tap in the 2-0. After halftime, Hertha had a lightning start when Lucas Tousart scored through the bottom bar, upsetting Borussia.

Finally, Marco Reus ended the home team’s uncertainty with a fine free kick. Julian Brandt rounded off a nice combination in extra time and gave Dortmund’s win some more shine.
