Ten Hag balks after draw at Barcelona
Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag has expressed disappointment at the 2-2 draw at FC Barcelona in the Europa League intermediate round. “We should have been more efficient in finishing,” Ten Hag said afterwards.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t score more,” Ten Hag said after the first playoff match. “We should have scored at least four goals.”
The Dutch coach was also disappointed that the referee condoned a foul on United striker Marcus Rashford on the edge of the penalty area. “We can argue whether it was in the penalty area or just outside it, but it was definitely a red card,” he said.
“I asked the referee what happened in his eyes and he said it was outside the penalty area and no foul. The linesman and referee were in a very good position and we have VAR. I thought it was a very bad decision,” said Ten Hag, who himself received yellow for protesting.
Trabzonspor on emotional night past Basel in Conference League
Trabzonspor defeated FC Basel in the intermediate round of the Conference League on an emotional evening. The Turkish club was 1-0 too strong for the Swiss in their own stadium.
The match was dedicated to the major earthquake disaster in Turkey. Trabzonspor donated the proceeds from the sale of the nearly 40,000 tickets to the survivors. Before the start of the game, a large banner was unveiled in the stands depicting a relief worker pulling a baby from under the rubble. Many flags of other Turkish clubs also flew in the stadium, saying, “We will all be together.”
Dane Jens Stryger Larsen scored the goal in the 65th minute for Trabzonspor, where Dutchmen Stefano Denswil and Dogucan Haspolat had a starting place. Naci Ünüvar remained on the reserve bench. At Basel, Wouter Burger played until the 80th minute.
