Barcelona’s Women Face Heartbreak: The Shocking Clásico Loss

In a thrilling match of El Clásico, the women’s team of FC Barcelona faced a surprising defeat at home against Real Madrid. This marks only the second instance of point loss for Barcelona in this season’s Spanish league. The match, held at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, attracted over 35,000 spectators, ending in a 1-3 defeat for the Catalan team. The last time Barcelona lost two league games in a single season was in 2018/19.

With this victory, the Madrid squad narrowed the gap in the title race, trailing Barcelona by just three points. Barcelona remains at the top of the Spanish league with a total of 63 points, closely followed by Real Madrid, which sits four points behind.

This victory also holds historical significance for Real Madrid, as it represents their first-ever win in El Clásico among women’s teams. Previously, Barcelona had dominated, winning all of the last eighteen encounters.

Brugts

Esmee Brugts, an international player for the Netherlands, played a key role after being substituted in the match. Her entry onto the field sparked hope for Barcelona as a potential comeback seemed imminent when Norwegian player Caroline Graham netted a goal. However, this hope was dashed when a clear goal for Barcelona was disallowed by the referee for offside, leaving no room for a VAR review.

In the closing moments, Scottish substitute Caroline Weir sealed the victory for Madrid with two decisive goals. Real Madrid had initially taken the lead just before halftime through Alba Redondo.

Chelsea-City Showdown

On the same football Sunday, several Dutch internationals are set to take the field. Chelsea and Manchester City will kick off at 15:30 in London.

Vivanne Miedema, Kerstin Casparij, and Jill Roord will represent Manchester City, currently positioned fourth in the league, as they face off against Chelsea, who leads the standings and features Wieke Kaptein in their squad.
