Footballers Uruguay world under-20 champions by goal just before time

Uruguay has won the World Cup for players under 20. In the final in La Plata, Argentina, the South Americans won 1-0 over Italy. Uruguay succeeds Ukraine, which won the tournament in 2019, as title holder.

The final match was not at all pleasing to the eye. Few chances were created, so goal scoring was out of the question for a long time.

Uruguay did have a slight field advantage and saw it paid off at the end of the match. Luciano Rodriguez (Liverpool FC Montevideo) headed in the 86th minute. The attackingly impotent Italy could not make a fist against the sturdy Uruguay even after the goal, leaving it at that one goal.

The Netherlands had not qualified for the tournament in which 24 countries competed.

The tournament was actually supposed to be played in Indonesia two years ago, but corona postponed it to this year. In late March, Indonesia was denied the tournament because of the stadium disaster last October and political riots related to Israel’s participation.
