Heracles Almelo has decided not to tour the city before the start of Sunday afternoon’s inauguration. The first division champion has made this decision following a tragic accident with a champion’s car on Saturday afternoon in Yerseke. A 5-year-old girl was killed in that accident.

“Heracles Almelo sympathizes with the bereaved families. After consultation with the Municipality of Almelo and the transport company, we feel it is inappropriate at this time to celebrate the championship on the flatcart,” the club said in a statement on its own website.

Inauguration in the city center goes ahead

Coach John Lammers’ team became champions Friday night after a 2-0 win over Jong Ajax. Promotion had been secured some time ago, but after the win and the lack of a big win by PEC Zwolle, the Almeloans became champions on goal difference.

The homage for that achievement in the center of Almelo does go ahead. The selection will take the players’ bus from the stadium straight to the city center to show the championship trophy to the supporters on the Marktplein.
