Barcelona honored by driving tour of city

FC Barcelona’s men’s and women’s teams drove through Barcelona on an open bus, where they were cheered by a huge crowd. Both soccer teams became national champions and this was celebrated extensively.

The bus left from Camp Nou stadium and then took a driving tour of the city. Many police were on hand as a precaution. The tour went off without a hitch. On Sunday night, after winning the national title, the players had to flee from supporters of city rival Espanyol.

After the final whistle, angry supporters of the losing club stormed onto the field. To save their lives, the players ran as fast as they could into the catacombs.

It is the men’s team’s first title since 2019, and thus also Frenkie de Jong’s first since his arrival at the club.

The women had already secured the title in April, playing only one match in a draw and otherwise winning all their matches. That tie was a memorable point loss, though. It was the first time in 62 matches that the Barcelona women did not win.
