Liverpool press Leicester deeper into worry, 2016 champions remain penultimate

Leicester City, the 2016 national champions, is another step closer to relegation from the Premier League. With a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool, the team remains penultimate with two games to go. The gap with the safe spot 17 is two points.

Liverpool, with Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk in the starting lineup, remains in the race for a Champions League ticket thanks to the victory. The team is now fifth, one point behind Manchester United and Newcastle, with one more game played. Place four gives the right to participate in the Champions League.

In a troubled early phase, in which Leicester threatened several times, especially through veteran Jamie Vardy, the game was played at a high tempo. But neither team got really big scoring chances.

The first big chance was an instant hit though. It was Liverpool that scored after a perfectly executed attack: Mo Salah passed the ball beautifully to Curtis Jones, who poked the ball into the far corner.

Less than a handful of minutes later Liverpool doubled the lead, it was Salah again who served Jones: 0-2. From the kickoff it was almost hit again, but Cody Gakpo was stranded on goalkeeper Daniel Iversen.

Until halftime, Liverpool was lord and master, but no more goals were scored.

After the break, Liverpool was again the dominant side, but failed to create any major chances. Although Mo Salah came close to scoring on 68 minutes. His effort was turned away with his fists by goalkeeper Iversen.

Trent Alexander-Arnold did hit the target two minutes later. Salah slashed a free kick to the Liverpool defender, who popped the ball into the top corner: 0-3. Salah, the man of three assists, should have scored as well. He headed alone at goalkeeper Iversen, but shot wide.

Leicester now plays the away game against Newcastle United and at home against West Ham United. Liverpool still plays against Aston Villa at home and will visit relegated Southampton on the final matchday.
