Remand PSV fan who attacked goalkeeper Sevilla extended by 14 days

The PSV supporter who attacked the Sevilla goalkeeper on Thursday remains in custody for the time being. The examining magistrate of the court in Den Bosch decided today to extend the 20-year-old man’s remand, Eindhovens Dagblad reports.

In any case, the field officer will remain in custody until March 8, when his case will be dealt with substantively by the judge. This is done through the fast-track justice system, which is used in cases with clear evidence.

In the closing stages of the match between PSV and Sevilla, the man came running onto the field. He tried to hit Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic, after which the Serbian goalkeeper worked him to the ground. Then the field stormer was removed from the field by stewards.

PSV expressed “deep shame” via a reaction on its website. Managing director Marcel Brands announced that he wants to recover the fine that UEFA will impose from the perpetrator, a resident of Roermond.

The perpetrator, who had a blood alcohol level of 1.6, was found to have already received two stadium bans from PSV and should not have been allowed access to the Philips Stadium. PSV reported that it would like to discuss with the authorities a reporting obligation for supporters with stadium bans, in order to prevent future incidents.

Despite the 2-0 win over Sevilla, PSV was eliminated from the Europa League. The Spanish club had earlier won the outward match 3-0.
