Loris Karius will be in the final of the English League Cup on Sunday afternoon. So says Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe. He will get the chance to “rewrite the story of his career,” Howe said. The German goalkeeper will then play his first serious match in about two years, at Wembley against coach Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

Karius made two hefty blunders when he played the 2018 Champions League final with Liverpool against Real Madrid. Mainly as a result, the English lost 3-1. Although it was later revealed that a concussion sustained earlier in the game was a possible cause of his failure, Karius never returned to action for Liverpool.

He was loaned out to Besiktas and Union Berlin, only to be acquired by Newcastle last September. There he actually became little more than Howe’s fourth choice.

But lo and behold, first choice Nick Pope received the red card last weekend against Liverpool and is suspended, his replacement Martin Dubravka is not eligible to play in the cup tournament because he was in action for United earlier this season and number 3 Karl Darlow is on loan.
