Kitao Sakurai is the new director of the Street Fighter movie

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai has been chosen as the new director of Street Fighter produced by Legendary Entertainment.

Sakurai, known for writing, directing, and producing The Eric Andre Show, will direct the film due out in U.S. theaters on March 20, 2026. Capcom is heavily involved in the adaptation, with Legendary leading development and production along with the Japanese company.

At the moment, we still know nothing about the next Street Fighter film, and with the release scheduled for next year, it will surely be some time before we receive new information. In June IGN had revealed that the film had lost both directors, but with Sakurai’s arrival, production should finally begin as planned.

Hollywood has tried in the past to bring Street Fighter to the big and small screen: Universal released an ill-fated film in 1994 starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Col. Guile and a cast that included Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia. More than a decade later, 20th Century Fox released Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), starring Kristin Kreuk. Like its predecessor, the film did far from well, both commercially and with critics.
