A Resident Evil movie reboot is reportedly in the works at PlayStation Productions

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, PlayStation Productions will be working on the production of a reboot film of Resident Evil.

According to the well-known American newspaper, Zach Cregger, best known for Barbarian, will direct and write the screenplay. Constantin Film, which has held the film rights to Resident Evil since the late 1990s, will produce the reboot along with PlayStation Productions. Shay Hatten, who worked on Zack Snyder’s John Wick: Chapter 4 and Army of the Dead, will write the film with Cregger.

One question remains who will get this film: per The Hollywood Reporter, four studios would like the Resident Evil reboot film, including Warner Bros. and Netflix. At the moment, however, no decision would be made.

Six Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich were released between 2002 and 2016, in which her character battles zombies and the Umbrella Corporation. The films have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide.

In recent years Constantin Film has tried to bring Resident Evil back to the big and small screen, releasing a live-action TV series for Netflix and two films, Resident Evil: Death Island and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
