The Last of Us, production of the second season will start in early 2024

Speaking during a recent press conference (via Variety), Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO, gave a brief update on the status of the second season of the TV series of The Last of Us.

According to Bloys’ words, production on the new part of the adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit video game series will start in early 2024. HBO had planned to start work on the second season of The Last of Us as early as this year, but scriptwriters’ strikes forced the production company to put it on hold for some time.

The second season of The Last of Us had been announced even before the first one ended earlier this year. Scheduled for 2025, this part was supposed to adapt The Last of Us Part 2, a title released on PS4 in 2020. However, strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA groups had led HBO to halt work on this new season.

In an interview with the website Deadline in July, Craig Mazin, showrunner of the TV series, had said that a third season is not to be ruled out as adapting the entire second game into a single season would be too complex.
