Seventh from Sevilla or sixth from Mourinho – Roma without Wijnaldum

Seventh from Sevilla or sixth from Mourinho – Roma without Wijnaldum

Not only in Sevilla and Rome, but also in Amsterdam, they will follow the Europa League final with great interest. The outcome could have favorable consequences for Ajax’s next European season.

Currently, the Amsterdammers hold a ticket to the final preliminary round of the Europa League. However, if AS Roma wins the Europa League as well as finishing fifth or sixth in the Italian league, Ajax will go directly to the group stage of the second European tournament.

How so? With Europa League wins, Roma gets a ticket to the Champions League. The entry ticket to the Europa League group stage, which the club earns upon a fifth or sixth place finish in Serie A, is then “not needed.

That ticket therefore shifts to the cup winner of the country seventh on the coefficient list for next season: Netherlands. Since cup winner PSV already has a better ticket (preliminary rounds of Champions League) because of its second place in the premier league, “substitute” Ajax is the lucky one.

Currently, AS Roma is sixth in the league, with one point more than number seven Juventus. Next Sunday awaits a home game against low-flyer Spezia in the final round of play.
