Joy among Heidenheim players

After the Bundesliga, Germany’s second tier also experienced a denouement full of drama. Hamburger SV thought it could return to the highest level after five years, but at Regensburg-Heidenheim the final whistle had not sounded at that time.

FC Heidenheim still scored in the third and ninth (!) minutes of extra time, turning a deficit into a win (2-3).

Also still champion

And so next season Heidenheim makes its debut in the Bundesliga. And to make things even better for the club, a defeat by leader Darmstadt (which was already sure of promotion) at Greuther Fürth (4-0) also secured the championship in extremis on goal difference.

HSV themselves, where Dutchman Ludovit Reis is a regular, had already won 1-0 at Sandhausen.

Tim Walter, HSV’s coach, thinks he’s been promoted

After losing the chances of promotion in the closing stages of the season four years in a row, this time it seemed to end well for HSV. Supporters even flocked to the pitch to celebrate the return to the highest level with the players.

Due to a long injury treatment at the beginning of the second half, time was added generously in Regensburg, so the joy at HSV eventually turned into great sorrow.

By the way, a second chance will follow, as the third place finish does entitle the team to promotion matches against VfB Stuttgart.
