Gran Turismo, the movie comes out on September 20 in Italy: first trailer

Sony released this afternoon the first trailer for the long-awaited Gran Turismo movie coming to theaters this September.

The film is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who won the GT Academy esports tournament in 2011 and is now a professional driver competing in the Japanese Super GT series. Archie Madekwe (Midsommar) will play Mardenborough in the film, which also stars Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Djimon Hounsou and Geri Horner.

With a screenplay by Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Baylin (King Richard) and based on a true story, the project is described as the ultimate wish-fulfillment story of a teenage boy who plays Gran Turismo and, thanks to his skills, wins a series of Nissan races to become a real professional race car driver.

In an interview with the PlayStation Blog, director Neil Blomkamp revealed that one of the inspirations for the Gran Turismo movie is Steve McQueen’s Le Mans. “That movie is crazy. You can see how fast they go. You can see how dangerous it is. You even see how much they pollute the cars. It’s amazing,” he said.

The Gran Turismo movie will be released in Italian theaters on Sept. 20.
