Visiting number eleven Girona, Real Madrid suffered a very painful league defeat. Thanks to great standout Valentín Castellanos it became 4-2 for the home club. It was already the sixth defeat for Real this season.

Argentine Castellanos was responsible for all of Girona’s goals. To score at least four goals against Real Madrid in the league, that had not happened for more than 75 years. The last time it happened was in December 1947. Then Esteban Echavarría, employed by Real Oviedo, even managed to score five times against the Royal.

Real played without injured striker Karim Benzema and sick goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Led by Vinícius Júnior, Real prevailed before halftime, but it did not produce much. Castellanos made his first after 15 minutes and after weak intervention by Eder Militao, the striker made his second.

Through a header by Vinícius, it became 2-1. Real could only watch as Girona ran out to 4-1 after the break through typical striker goals by the Argentine. Lucas Vazquez managed to make the score look a little better by making it 4-2 five minutes before time.

Barça happy

Thanks to the win, Girona climbs to ninth place in La Liga. At leader FC Barcelona, they will have received the result with cheers, as Frenkie de Jong’s team can extend the already hefty margin on the league number two to fourteen points on Wednesday night. The Catalans will then visit Rayo Vallecano.
