Watch the summary of FC Volendam – SC Cambuur

FC Volendam did excellent business in the fight against relegation with a 2-0 win over SC Cambuur. Damon Mirani scored two goals. The bottom club from Friesland suffered its sixth defeat in a row and can hardly avoid relegation to the first division.

The match at Volendam’s Dijk was on paper a real dungeon cracker and the game was nothing to write home about. Cambuur started the game nicely and in the fifth minute Jamie Jacobs had a great opportunity to open the scoring. From a good position he pushed the ball wide of the post with his inside foot.

The team from Leeuwarden had a few more chances – a corner by Mimoun Mahi almost sailed into the goal – and Volendam was unlucky with injuries to Gaetano Oristanio and Brian Plat, who both had to be sidelined before halftime.

Watch reactions from Cambuur coach Sjors Ultee, Volendam coach Wim Jonk and matchwinner Damon Mirani:

Still, Volendam went into the locker room feeling elated. In the 39th minute, a corner by captain Carel Eiting landed on the head of Damon Mirani, and via a scramble the ball went into the goal for the 1-0.

Dark clouds

Dark clouds gathered over the stadium, where the second half began with a slight delay due to severe thunderstorms.

Sjors Ultee balks

Cambuur, looking for a final straw, was soon close to the equalizer when Bjørn Johnsen killed a header chance. But the best opportunities after halftime were for Volendam.

An already loudly applauded goal by Daryl van Mieghem was disallowed on VAR instructions due to offside by substitute Robert Mühren. The same Van Mieghem delivered a hard shot straight at Cambuur goalie Robbin Ruiter and Mühren worked the ball into the side netting moments later.

Mirani again

The wait was on for the 2-0. Francesco Antonucci was good for a beautiful shot that sailed towards the cross but was tapped out of the goal by Ruiter with a nice dive. But in the ninetieth minute, Mirani again headed in a corner from Eiting.

Volendam took another step towards survival, for Cambuur the curtain seems to be about to fall.
