Frenkie de Jong resumes group training at Barcelona after month of injury

NOS Football

Frenkie de Jong resumed group training at FC Barcelona on Monday. The midfielder was sidelined for nearly a month with a hamstring injury, suffered in the closing seconds of the 2-1 win against Real Madrid on March 19.

As a result, De Jong missed the Orange’s first two European Championship qualifiers and four Barcelona matches. Without the 25-year-old midfielder, the Catalan club won 4-0 at Elche, but after that coach Xavi’s team failed to win or even score at all.

Barcelona went down hard in the semifinals of the Spanish Cup against Real Madrid (0-4) and did not go beyond 0-0 in La Liga against both Girona and Sunday against Getafe.

The Catalans do still have an 11-point lead over Real Madrid at the head of La Liga and 13 points over Atlético Madrid, which is Sunday’s opponent at Camp Nou. Possibly De Jong will be able to make his comeback then.
