Watch the summary of NEC – Vitesse

The sixtieth Gelderland derby in an Eredivisie context became a prey for Vitesse. The Arnheimers triumphed 1-4, partly due to NEC goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen’s marksmanship.

The Oranje international, still under the crossbar in late March against France and Gibraltar, made two horrendous mistakes. Only in the first half did that cost him a goal.

Cillessen after blunder: ‘Apologies to NEC supporters’

Cillessen went dribbling toward the side after a return ball, but Mohamed Sankoh eluded him and laid the ball back to Kacper Kozlowski. The Pole then simply tapped in.

At that moment it was already 0-1 through a goal by Matús Bero, who was allowed to strike from the edge of the sixteen-meter area. Cillessen had to stretch and give way.

Arnhem joy after Bero’s goal

NEC, without the still unfit Oussama Tannane, almost had a quick answer ready. Elayis Tavsan, however, hit Vitesse goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, who also kept Ibrahim Cissoko from scoring on the stroke of half-time.

Nearly fatal throw-out

After halftime, Cillessen blundered again. A throw-out from the goalkeeper landed right into the feet of Kozlowski, who in turn hit the crossbar. Bero did score a goal in the rebound, but the Sankoh involved in the play was offside earlier.

After Lasse Schöne hit the post from a free kick, Vitesse ran out even further. Bart van Rooij (own goal) and Ryan Flamingo provided the Arnhem goals. In between, Dirk Proper saved the Nijmegen honor.

For Vitesse, which defeated Go Ahead Eagles 2-0 after a weak series last week, the next victory came as a godsend in the fight against relegation. NEC remains tenth.
