PEC takes another big step toward promotion and championship

PEC Zwolle is another step closer to their long-awaited promotion. The Zwollenaren won 2-0 at home against Telstar and if Almere City loses Sunday at ADO Den Haag, the Keuken Kampioenschap Divisie frontrunner can finally prepare for the premier league.

If things don’t fall right for PEC on Sunday, the team can force promotion next Friday in the away game against Almere City.

PEC is also still in a good position in the title race. The lead over Heracles Almelo, which won 1-0 against Roda JC Kerkrade, remains five points with five games to go.

The mood was good anyway among the home supporters thanks to Bram van Polen’s ’round’. The 37-year-old captain will stay with PEC for another year and informed all season ticket holders in a letter this week. This included a token for a free drink during the game with Telstar.

Davy van den Berg could have doubled the margin for Zwolle, but he let the Telstar defense get away with fumbling by sliding the ball wide.

Christos Ciousis was to blame for not scoring the equalizer. Free in front of goal, he shot straight into the hands of goalkeeper Jasper Schendelaar. An Anwar Bensabouh header also ended up in the hands of the PEC goalkeeper.

In the second half, Zwolle remained much stronger than Telstar and after more than an hour of play, Van den Belt secured the three points with his second goal of the evening. From a free kick by Bart van Hintum, he headed the ball behind Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman.
