Phillip Cocu will be missing from Vitesse for the next few days. The coach is struggling with appendicitis and needs surgery. It is still unclear how long the 52-year-old Cocu will be missing. Next Saturday’s Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles will probably come too soon.

This week, assistant Chris van der Weerden will take over the training sessions. Should Cocu indeed be absent on Saturday, Van der Weerden will also be in charge.

Relegation concerns

Earlier this season, Cocu stepped in at Vitesse as Thomas Letsch’s replacement. The German left in September for relegation-threatened VFL Bochum. Bochum has since climbed to 14th place in the Bundesliga.

With only seven games to go, Vitesse can currently use every point. Nacompetition is frighteningly close. The team is fourteenth on the league table, with the same number of points as sixteen Excelsior. The Rotterdammers are in the relegation zone.
