The Last of Us, big hit for latest episode of HBO TV series: 8.2 million viewers despite Oscars

Last weekend, the ninth and final episode of the TV series of The Last of Us, and HBO provided Variety with ratings data for this concluding installment.
According to reports, the ninth episode of The Last of Us had an impressive 8.2 million viewers on the night between Sunday and Monday, a ratings record that should not be underestimated considering that at the same time the Oscar awards ceremony, one of the most watched events in the United States, was airing.
Warner Bros. Discovery reported that the first six episodes of the series averaged 30.4 million viewers, even after its initial airing, with episode 1 alone reaching 40 million total viewers in the weeks following its debut. In Europe and Latin America, The Last of Us became the most-watched show in the history of HBO Max.
This is not the first time The Last of Us has outdone itself while competing with a major awards event. Episode 4, titled “Please Hold to My Hand,” reached 7.5 million viewers when it aired in conjunction with the Grammys. In its debut, The Last of Us also surpassed House of the Dragon to become the second most-watched series on its first episode with 4.7 million viewers.
Did you know that a third season of The Last of Us, after the second, might not be so unlikely?
