FC Emmen took an important step in the battle for survival in the premier league. The men from Drenthe beat Excelsior 2-0 at home and thus pass the number fifteen of the league table.
The Rotterdammers, who suffered their fifth defeat in a row, may even end up below the relegation line if FC Groningen manages to surprise at AZ later today.
Emmen goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart saved the home club from an early deficit by defusing a diagonal cross from Couhaib Driouech with his foot. For a long time after that, there was little to experience at De Oude Meerdijk where fear (of defeat) reigned.
Only in the closing stages of the first half was there some excitement again. Van der Hart again distinguished himself with a clever reflex on a shot from close range by Nikolas Agrafiotis.

‘We score too little’ sees Van Gassel, Romeny calls goal liberating
At the other end, Siebe Horemans, playing his 150th game for Excelsior, assisted his goalkeeper with a save on the line after Mike te Wierik had once again come through dangerously on the right.
Romeney strikes
After halftime, the guests took the initiative and Agrafiotis got Van der Hart into trouble, who only managed the Drenthe goalkeeper in three instances. Excelsior colleague Stijn van Gassel could not say the same when halfway through the second half Ole Romeny fired a header at him after a Mark Diemers free kick: 1-0. The goalkeeper was unable to answer.
Van Gassel was ready for a shot by Richairo Zivkovic, who was played free by Diemers. In the rebound Romeney – him again – scored: 2-0.
