AZ took the full spoils against Vitesse without too many problems. In Arnhem, the Alkmaarers scored a 1-0 victory and thus remain in the title race. AZ is currently second in the Eredivisie.
Ten years ago Theo Bos died and the Vitesse icon was extensively honored in Arnhem. The home team played in special shirts and with a special captain’s armband, and a magnificent canvas was on display in the stands. In minute four, the former number four received a standing ovation.
Vitesse could not crown the tribute with a win. AZ showed the most initiative before the break and also got the best chances.
In the 29th minute, Jesper Karlsson put the visitors ahead. The Swede took the corner short to Milos Kerkez, got the ball back and surprised Kjell Scherpen with a shot into the short corner.
A mistake by Vitesse’s goalkeeper. Scherpen, Friday included in the pre-selection of the Dutch national team, was still there, but should have done more. Scherpen did cleverly stop a Vangelis Pavlidis effort shortly after Jens Odgaard missed a chance for the 0-2.
Shortly after halftime, Vitesse got away well when an effort intended as a cross from Karlsson flew wide. And midway through the second half, Djordje Mihailovic’s shot hit the crossbar. In the closing stages of the game Vitesse continued to press, although the offensive produced no chances.
