Jetro Willems has signed a contract until the end of the season with FC Groningen. The left back has been training for a week with the Premier League side, which is in relegation trouble.

The 28-year-old Willems, who played his 22nd and last international in 2016, did not have a club this season. He played last season for SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the German league. Previously, he was active with Sparta, PSV, Eintracht Frankfurt and Newcastle United.

Champion with PSV

The Rotterdam native made a name for himself at a young age at Sparta, earning a transfer to PSV when he was seventeen. Just a year later, he was a base player in the Dutch national team at the disappointing 2012 European Championship in Ukraine and Poland.

Willems became champion twice with PSV, where he was under contract for six years, and captured the 2018 German Cup with Frankfurt.
