At an upscale law firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, two best friends are torn apart forever when one of them is found dead in a canal.

39-year-old Melissa Lewis previously worked for prestigious firm Rothstein, Rosenfeldt, & Adler before the Ponzi scheme led to its undoing, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Known as an attractive, snappy, attorney, who was always put together, Melissa often wore fancy jewelry and her Prada purse in bold red.

On The Shadows of Death: “The Secret,” you’ll hear details concerning her 2008 disappearance. When Melissa Britt Lewis missed work and didn’t answer any calls, investigators began looking for her. Outside her beautiful home, they found pepper spray. It appeared the killer had attacked when she arrived at her house.

Debra Coffey was having a rough time in her marriage and often spoke to Melissa about her problems with Tony. Detectives believe an angry Tony Villegas went to Melissa Lewis’ home to confront her and kill her for meddling in his private affairs. A medical examiner’s report showed Melissa Lewis was strangled to death before her body was discarded in the canal.

Cell phone calls connected Tony Villegas to the crime. He was sentenced to life in prison for the slaying. Being friends with Debra Coffey cost Melissa Lewis her life. Watch her story on The Shadows of Death: “The Secret” tonight at 10 p.m. on Investigation Discovery.
