Jussie Smollett: Is Empire Actor Mentally Ill?

Empire’s Jussie Smollett is under arrest. According to ABC News, Smollett turned himself into police. Authorities accuse the star of lying to them and filing a false police report. They also believe Jussie Smollett wrote a threatening letter. If convicted, he faces three years in jail. Police say Jussie faked the attack as a publicity stunt to promote his career. But many wonder if there is a deeper issue, suggesting that the Empire actor is mentally ill.

On January 29, Jussie Smollett reported two men walked up to him, yelled derogatory racial and homophobic names, and hanged him with a rope, later dousing him with a substance consistent with bleach.

Police retrieved surveillance footage that helped them identify two Nigerian brothers. A tipster told Chicago police they witnessed Jussie and the two men in an elevator close to the crime scene, where Jussie claims he was attacked. It also came to light that Jussie knew the brothers. One appeared in an episode of Empire.

When news of the attack spread online, fans and celebs were devastated to hear what happened to Jussie Smollett. But when the photo of him in the hospital surfaced, and the injuries didn’t look as serious as the allegations, many began questioning the validity of his statements.

Within days, news outlets reported Smollett knew the brothers and that he may have concocted the hate crime hoax in retaliation for the lack of attention after a mysterious and threatening letter showed up on the set of Empire.

On YouTube and in online Facebook groups, fans are engaged in a bitter war over whether Jussie Smollett was jumped by the two men, or if he made it all up. Now, all everyone wants to know is why. Some believe he could be mentally ill. Others say he simply wanted to blame it on Trump supporters. Most everyone agrees, he ruined Black History Month.

Here is a brief timeline of Jussie Smollett’s police arrest record.
