On the day of the shooting, Kayla Atkinson bumped into Shane Young again at a local store. Shane Young recognized her, but she was able to escape. Hoping she’d lost him, Kayla Atkinson headed home, where she lived with her grandmother and mother.

When Kayla Atkinson arrived, Shane Young blasted his way inside, taking four adults hostage. According to WYFF-4’s report, the victims were family friend Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Horton, 48, grandmother Sandy Hand, mother Cheryl Mann, daughter Kayla Atkinson, and granddaughter Summer, 10, according to the report.

Court records show Shane Young had arrived at the house to kill Kayla Atkinson, but when he made his way inside, he couldn’t find her. Kenneth Horton, who police believe was dating Kayla, tried to protect them all but was shot and killed. Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Horton, a construction worker and tree serviceman, according to his obituary, was found in one of the bedrooms lying face down with a shot to the chest, according to Patch.

The entire family was shoved into a bathroom where it is believed Kayla Atkinson was hiding behind a shower curtain. Shane Kelly Young never knew she was there. South Carolina authorities tried to negotiate with the hostage taker by phone. After several hours, the SWAT team swooped in, and shots were fired. Shane Young was taken into custody. Summer received an injury to the leg. Two police officers were also injured.

When Shane Young saw Kayla Atkinson at the store that day, he was determined to kill her. Relatives say they are happy Shane Young didn’t find Kayla.

The trailer home where the incident took place was left bullet-ridden. A plea for help in restoring the mobile home was made to the public in the newspapers. Tune into Home Alone tonight to confirm that the story is about the Shane Young case. It airs at 10 p.m. on Investigation Discovery. You can read a synopsis of the Home Alone episode titled “Behind the Shower Curtain” here.
